How to Care for Oriental Rugs

rug cleaning hendersonville nc

Oriental rugs are beautiful and timeless pieces that can add character and style to any room. However, cleaning and caring for these rugs can be a challenge, especially if you’re not familiar with the proper care methods for their delicate fibers and intricate designs. Here are a few tips to help you care for oriental rugs, keeping them looking their best for years to come.

First and foremost, vacuuming is an essential step in maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of your oriental rug. Regular vacuuming helps to remove dirt and dust ath can accumulate in the fibers and cause discoloration or damage over time. Make sure to use the gentle setting on your vacuum and be careful not to damage the fibers or fringe.

It’s also important to spot clean spills and stains as soon as they occur. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as these can damage the fibers and dyes of the rug. Instead, use a gentle cleaner and a clean, white cloth to blot the stain. If the stain is particularly stubborn, it’s best to consult a professional cleaner for advice.

Rotating your oriental rug every year or so can help to prevent wear and tear in high-traffic areas. This will also give you the opportunity to closely inspect the rug for any damage such as holes or frayed edges, which can be repaired by a professional rug restorer.

Another way to protect your oriental rug is to place it in an area where it will receive the least amount of foot traffic. This will help to prevent dirt, debris, and other harmful elements from accumulating in the fibers, which can cause discoloration and damage over time. Additionally, consider placing a rug pad under your oriental rug to provide extra cushioning and prevent slipping.

Finally, it’s important to have your oriental rug professionally cleaned every few years. This will not only help to remove any built-up dirt and debris, but also keep the colors vibrant and the fibers strong. A professional cleaner will have the knowledge and equipment to clean your rug without causing damage, leaving it looking and feeling like new.

DIY vs Professional Rug Cleaning: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to rug cleaning, you have two options: do it yourself or hire a professional. While DIY rug cleaning may seem like a cost-effective solution, it’s important to understand the differences between the two methods before making a decision. To help you make an informed decision, here are the differences between DIY vs professional rug cleaning.

One of the main differences between DIY and professional rug cleaning is the level of expertise. Professional rug cleaners have years of experience and knowledge in the industry, as well as access to specialized equipment and cleaning solutions. They clean rugs every single day, so they know their stuff! A professional cleaner can identify and remove even the toughest stains and dirt, leaving your rug looking and smelling fresh. On the other hand, DIY rug cleaning methods may not be as effective and can sometimes damage the rug.

Another difference is the amount of time and effort required. DIY rug cleaning can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially if you have a large rug or multiple rugs to clean. Professional rug cleaners, on the other hand, are able to clean your rug in a fraction of the time it would take to do it yourself. They also have the necessary tools and equipment to handle the job efficiently and effectively.

One of the biggest benefits of professional rug cleaning is the results. Professional cleaners use powerful cleaning solutions and equipment that are able to remove even the most stubborn stains and odors. This results in a deep clean, even if your rug has years’ worth of built-up dirt and grime. On the other hand, DIY rug cleaning methods may not be as effective, leaving behind residual dirt and stains. Inappropriate cleaning solutions can also leave behind sticky residues that will actually attract more dirt!

You can’t beat the peace of mind that comes with professional rug cleaning, especially if your rugs represent a substantial investment. When you hire a professional, you can rest assured that your rug is in good hands. Professional cleaners are insured and trained in safe and effective cleaning methods, ensuring that your rugs will not be damaged during the cleaning process. Additionally, they will be able to advise you on how to maintain the rug and extend its lifespan.

Last but not least, professional rug cleaning can save you money over the long term. While DIY rug cleaning seem like a cost-effective solution in the short-term, it can end up being more expensive in the long run. If done incorrectly, DIY cleaning can damage the rug and reduce its lifespan, requiring costly repairs or replacement. Professional rug cleaning will leave your rug looking, smelling, and feeling great for years to come.

Professional rug cleaning offers a deeper clean, faster results, better peace of mind, and cost savings in the long run. If you are looking for a great professional rug cleaner in the Asheville NC area, look no further! Give Five Step a call at 828.237.3237 or send us a message for more info.

Regular Carpet Cleaning Promotes Better Indoor Air Quality

clean carpet air quality

Carpets are a popular flooring option in many homes and businesses, providing a soft, warm surface to walk on. However, carpets can also act as a filter, trapping dirt, dust, and other contaminants in its fibers. This is why regular carpet cleaning is crucial to maintaining not only the appearance of your carpets, but also the indoor air quality of your home or business.

Carpets that are not cleaned regularly can become dirty, stained, and worn, making your entire space look unkempt. Cleaning removes dirt and stains that can make your carpet look old, but it also removes allergens, bacteria, and viruses that make your home or business unsanitary.

Carpets can act as a trap for dust, mold spores, and other particles that can be harmful to your health. These contaminants can cause respiratory problems, exacerbate allergies, and lead to more serious health conditions. Regular professional cleaning removes these contaminants, improving the indoor air quality of your home or business.

Regular carpet cleaning also helps prevent mold and mildew. Neglected carpets, especially in damp or humid environments, can get moisture trapped between the carpet and the subflooring, providing an ideal environment for mold and mildew growth.

Finally, carpets that are not cleaned regularly can become unhygienic, harboring harmful microorganisms like bacteria and viruses and keeping your family or work crew in a cycle of contagious colds and flus.

In conclusion, regular carpet cleaning is crucial for maintaining not just the appearance of your carpets, but also the indoor air quality of your home or business. It helps remove dirt, stains, allergens, and harmful microorganisms that can negatively impact your health! To maintain the overall hygiene of your home or business, it is recommended to schedule professional carpet cleaning at least once per year, or more frequently for high-traffic areas.

If you live or conduct business in the Asheville, NC area, give Five Step a call at 828.237.3237 for all of your carpet cleaning needs! Or just drop us a line via our contact form.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Maintaining Tile Floors

maintaining tile floors

Tile flooring is a great option for both residential and commercial properties due to its durability and ease of maintenance. However, it is crucial to know the right cleaning and maintenance techniques in order to keep your tile floors looking their best for the life of the tile. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the Do’s and Don’ts of cleaning and maintaining tile floors.

Let’s start with the Do’s.

  • Regularly sweep or dry mop the tile floors to remove any dirt and debris. This will prevent any damage to the tile and grout caused by scratches.
  • Use a mild detergent and warm water to clean your tile floors.
  • Use a damp mop to clean the tile floors.
  • Seal the grout regularly to protect it from staining and damage. Re-seal every 12-18 months or as needed.

Now, let’s move on to the Don’ts.

  • Don’t use abrasive cleaning products or scrub brushes on your tile floors. These can scratch and damage the tile and grout.
  • Don’t use too much water when cleaning tile. This can cause damage to both the grout and the underlying subfloor.
  • Don’t use a high heat steam cleaner, as the heat and pressure can be destructive to the tile and grout.
  • Avoid walking on tile floors with high heels or other hard-soled shoes. This can cause chipping and scratching.

Maintaining tile floors doesn’t have to be difficult! By following these Do’s and Don’ts, you can ensure that your tile floors will remain in great condition for a long time. Remember to sweep or dry mop regularly, use mild detergent and warm water to clean, seal the grout, and avoid using harsh chemicals or excessive water. Fall Cleaning Checklist

fall cleaning
Everyone knows about spring cleaning, the time when we clear our house of the dust, dirt, and accumulated “stuff” of our winter hibernation. Fall cleaning is just as important, even though no one ever talks about it.

If spring is a time of renewal, a time when we want to release what’s old and stale in order to let in new light and fresh air, then fall is a time of gathering. When the air turns crisp and cool and the leaves begin to fall from the trees, it’s time to harvest what we sowed in the spring in order to create a warm and comfortable, homey space for the coming winter.

So what does a thorough fall cleaning look like? Follow this fall cleaning checklist to make sure your home is ready for a warm and cozy winter!

  • Warmth: Clean the woodstove or fireplace, bring in firewood or order fuel, bring space heaters out of storage and dust them off.
  • Coziness: It’s almost time to bundle up and hunker down! Bring winter clothes and blankets out of storage and launder or dry clean them so they’ll be ready for cozy nights around the fireplace with hot chocolate.
  • Air Quality: Closing up the windows and settling in for winter means the air circulation in your house may be reduced. In order to keep the air clean and healthy throughout winter, you’ll need to change the air filters on your furnace or HVAC system. Don’t forget to bring air purifiers and humidifiers out of storage, as well.
  • Deep cleaning and dusting: Your family is going to be spending a lot of time indoors over the coming months, and breathing so now is a great time to clean and dust in all those places that get ignored during the busy summer. Sweep or vacuum under furniture, dust the curtains and blinds, and clean underneath the fridge and other appliances.
  • Carpets, rugs, and upholstery: To ensure your home is the coziest it can be during the cold winter season, you’ll want to deep clean your carpets, rugs, and upholstery! Five Step can help with this process, of course! Give us a call at 828.237.3237 or drop us a line to get your free estimate today!

What We’re Thankful for in 2022

We’ve been spared so far from chilly weather here in WNC this fall, but the leaves have changed color and cold, wintry days are just around the corner. The leaf peepers have come and gone, and we’re settling in for a cozy winter. Thanksgiving is just a week away, can you believe it?!

In the spirit of the holiday, we’d like to take a few minutes to talk about what we’re thankful for this November.

  1. Clean sofas and chairs! (And carpet, rugs, hardwood floors, and tile.) We are thankful that we’re able to bring a non-toxic, eco-friendly, and sustainable clean to so many area homes and businesses. There’s something about a freshly cleaned sofa or armchair that adds warmth and coziness to any home, and we really appreciate the opportunity to help provide that extra level of comfort for so many local families.
  2. We are safe, healthy, and warm. Let’s not take it for granted. Not everyone is so fortunate as to have a sturdy, dry home; good health; plenty of food; and friends and family to share it with this Thanksgiving.
  3. We live in Asheville! We truly do live in one of the most gorgeous places in the world, and we are so grateful to call western North Carolina home. From the breezy hot afternoons of June to the quiet snowy mornings of January, the weather is nice almost all year round. We get to take in the most breathtaking mountain views just driving to our clients’ homes and businesses every day. There are so many fun things to do and experience in WNC—from delicious cuisine to waterfall hikes to musical events to brewery tours. And this area is populated with some of the loveliest, kindest, and most interesting people on earth. We wouldn’t trade our home here for anywhere else.
  4. New friends and associates! We are very active in our local business networking community, and with the gradual reopening of the economy after the pandemic, 2022 has been a great year for meeting new people and establishing mutually beneficial business connections. We love being a part of this vibrant community, and we look forward to all that 2023 has to offer.
  5. Pumpkin recipes! Not everyone loves pumpkin pie, pumpkin soup, pumpkin bread, pumpkin spice lattes, and all the other pumpkin items that make their annual appearance around this time of year. But for those of us who do, this is the time of year to appreciate all of that pumpkin delight. Get it while you can, because those pumpkins are going to disappear from the supermarket before Christmas!
  6. Our fantastic customers! Our clients are the best. Really. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank YOU for your trust, your support, your business, and your friendship. We strive every day to give you, our customers, the high-quality work and friendly service you deserve and expect from us. We heartily extend our gratitude to you for helping to make our business a success!

We hope you have just as many things to be thankful for this year as we do, and that your holiday is filled with joy.

Happy Thanksgiving from your friends at Five Step!

How to Clean Velvet Upholstery

clean velvet upholstery

Who doesn’t love the beauty and luxuriousness of rich, velvet upholstery? No one! But this upholstery can be one of the trickiest types to clean. Stains don’t only stick to the surface of the velvet, they also coat the individual fibers and seep into the backing, causing quite a mess! So how do you clean a velvet sofa, chair, or ottoman? Follow these tips to find out how to clean velvet upholstery.

What type of velvet is your upholstery?
If your upholstery is synthetic velvet (or velveteen), you should be able to DIY it without too much trouble. If, however, the velvet is made from cotton, silk, or wool, you may want to call in an expert. Cotton velvet is especially finicky, and the fibers can bunch and kink when they come into contact with soap, water, or cleaning solutions.

To get stains out of synthetic velvets:
Clean the fabric as soon as possible after staining occurs. Do not allow the stain to dry on its own, as it will set into the fabric and become much harder to clean. With a clean cloth or towel, gently press the stain to absorb any moisture and wipe away any loose debris. Prepare a mixture of lukewarm water and dish soap, then apply the suds to the stain. Rinse by dabbing with a damp, soap-free cloth. Allow the velvet to dry and then gently brush it.

For regular maintenance:
Clean your velvet upholstery with a furniture brush to remove dirt, lint, and fuzz. Vacuum regularly with the furniture attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Velveteen can be safely steam cleaned. For cotton, silk, or wool velvet, check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

If you’re not sure whether your upholstery is synthetic velveteen or natural fiber velvet, you’re likely better off calling a professional upholstery cleaning service to handle the job. If you live in the Asheville, NC area, we would be happy to help you with your velvet couch, chair, or other furniture.

Give us a call at 828.237.3277 or drop us a line for an estimate today. We look forward to hearing from you!
